It first opened in 1928. The Hrad. The administrative building of Zbrojovka, whose blueprints were penned by architect Bohumír Čermák on the corner of Lazaretní Street. Now, after nearly 100 years, it has reopened. In a “new coat”, with new content, but actually still the same. Yours.
The Hrad (castle) was originally just a nickname. It was bestowed upon this beautiful building with functionalist features by the hundreds of employees who streamed in and out every day. It housed the management of Zbrojovka, becoming the site to negotiate large deals, sign important contracts. For its time, this building was timeless. On the ground floor of the large lobby, with its rich marble panelling, a modern elevator, imaginatively set in a unique elevator shaft, took you to the upper floors. The roof was adorned with a neon advertising cube blazoned with Zbrojovka’s “Z”, one of the biggest advertisements at the time. Thanks to this symbol, the building became one of the icons of Brno. All this has remained at the Hrad. From the outside it has remained largely unchanged. Inside, too, the whole course of reconstruction placed great emphasis on preserving the original historical features to the maximum extent possible. But be frank, our needs are a little different now than they were 100 years ago. So, quite logically, everything could not be preserved and restored. Functional, modern features and technologies had to be added. The Hrad is now a multipurpose building. Translation: it has three floors of offices, plus services and retail. It’s full. The management of Nová Zbrojovka moved back and Aero Vodochody, Eng.Co Group, CEVRE and Watson Real Estate have also found their new headquarters there. Barbers from Ohol.to and the BJP Store have settled in on the ground floor. Thanks to Endor there is a gym, a restaurant and rooftop café with a terrace overlooking Brno andthe whole project of Nová Zbrojovka. The Hrad just came alive. And thanks to you and your vote, it finally got that name officially. Because it makes sense. It continues to be one of the entrance gates to the complex and oversees the entire Nová Zbrojovka project. And while it no longer sends new weapons, typewriters, tractors or cars into the world, its task is no less grand. In its shadow is growing a new quarter – Nová Zbrojovka.
